Some fans are starting to lose patience as Hemmings has failed to score in any of his six games so far and had a penalty saved, yet he arrived on loan from Oxford last month with a scoring record of almost one every two games.

“He just needs a goal,” said Evans. “I can remember Alan Shearer getting that sort of stick once and how can you give him stick?
“Strikers occasionally do go through spells. Kane has always been a goalscorer and always will be a goalscorer.

“Probably by this stage he gets a little bit frustrated and wants things to happen quicker which affects your all-round game when that’s in your head.

“But we’ve never seen chalk and cheese as much in two Saturdays as Paul Digby. At Lincoln he was man of the match for me and outstanding, then wasn’t so good here on Saturday. It can happen in football.”

Evans added: “What you need is a management team who believe in you. We believe in Kane Hemmings and if he was available tomorrow we’d still try to bring him to the football club.

“We have to believe he will deliver the goods.”
