Stags boss Steve Evans will make use of the lack of a game this week or weekend with a behind-closed-doors friendly against Sheffield United tomorrow to better assess his fringe players.

“That is a benefit for midweek, but I’d rather have a game on Saturday to be honest, either here or away in League Two,” he said.

“When you lose a game it can’t come quickly enough round to the next one.

“But we have a closed doors match planned for this week which is great for us as it gives us the opportunity to look at some of the lads that have only been having peacemeal off the bench or looking at them in training.

“There is nothing that can beat a game where you play against another side who have players playing that want to be in their first team.

“It’s important we have a really good look at lads that have not been picked by us as we’ve not really seen them in a game situation, just footage and clips plus reserve games. But nothing beats the opportunity to watch a player when they are working for yourself.

“We will give them a little break towards the weekend and then we’ll be back in over the weekend obviously preparing to go to Carlisle.”
