Speaking after the game United boss Paul Postlethwaite said: “I suppose it was all about three points and we achieved that quite easily.

“We never got going, but we have played a lot tough matches lately and maybe it showed a little.

“But they say a sign of a good side is to still win when playing badly, so obviously I am delighted with that especially as we have moved up to fifth with two games in hand on the teams above.”

Belper rotated their team with Shaun Roulston and Scott Whittingham both rested and Evan Garnett was unavailable.

Adam Moss came back in defence with Mark Rathbone taking over in goals.

A young Southwell side started brightly and had the better of the early possession and had a couple of opportunities to take the lead.

But after 10 minutes United started to get into the game and the pace of the forward line was looking to break through the Southwell defence.

United took the lead after 17 minute when Sam Vickers found the back of the net with the keeper caught totally out of position.

Belper then had chances to increase the lead with a succession of corners and crosses from both sides of the pitch but couldn’t take advantage.

United came out in the second half with a slightly better tempo and, after 51 minutes, doubled the lead.

A great move involving Nick Murray saw United attacking the Southwell box and his square ball saw Ash Dhindsa slot home from six yards.

There now only looked one winner, but the game had a feel of an end of season game and United never appeared to get out of second gear.

United made it 3-0 after 72 minutes with another good solo goal from Sam Vickers.

A late header from Calum Law got a consolation goal for Southwell.
