Manager Rudy Funk was left 'baffled' after he was controversially sent to the stands during AFC Mansfield's 2-1 defeat at Stocksbridge Park Steels.

Only moments after Stocksbridge had taken a tenth-minute lead in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League, Division One East game, Funk was dismissed for alleged comments he made towards the referee.

“I will not deny that I swore,” said Funk. “But it wasn’t directed straight at his face. I wanted him to come and explain his decision for the goal because it looked blatant handball.

“I will certainly appeal because I know who I am. I know the way I conduct myself, particularly towards officials.”

The goal came when Jimmy Ghaichem’s mistimed interception allowed Alex Wiles to sprint clear and square for Kane Swinburn to tap home.

AFC were indebted to goalkeeper Jason White for some key saves before they woke up and levelled on 51 when defender Bradley Beatson flicked a long throw over the ‘keeper for an own goal. AFC looked on top until Steels full-back Rory Coleman turned his man and slotted home a 72nd minute winner.

AFC LINE-UP -- White/ Marsden, Annable, Ghaichem, Broadhead (Lindley 11), D’Laryea, Karkach, Buxton, Guest (Wells K. 80), Wells B., Dear.
