The Berkshire visitors were on the front foot from the moment they took the lead in the 15th minute and thoroughly deserved their 4-2 success.

While they cemented third place in the Vanarama National League North table, only six points behind leaders York City, Alfreton slid to 14th, only six points ahead of the bottom five.

The Reds fell behind when a counter-attack, led by Wes York, found James Armson, who played the ball back, enabling York to slot into the corner past goalkeeper Jordan Wright.

Armson made it two just after the half-hour mark, converting a penalty, awarded for holding in the box. And it was 3-0 11 minutes into the second half when Matt Lowe finished in the corner after striding, unmarked, on to a cross from the right.

Alfreton’s dismal day continued in the 65th minute when Brackley added a fourth goal. This time, Ellis Myles raced down the right and, as the Reds were carved open again, he found Lee Ndolovu, who tucked away the chance well.

At least the home side kept going, and they were rewarded with two consolation goals in the dying minutes. First, Bobby Johnson scored from the penalty spot after Andy Kellett had been brought down when trying to connect with a cross from Michael Freiter. And then Conor Branson’s cross was touched home by a Saints defender for an own goal.
