Alfreton Town sign Sam Berry on one-year deal

Alfreton Town FC manager Nicky Law has made his second signing of the summer by bringing in former Derby County central defender Sam Berry on a one-year deal.

Whilst with the Rams he had a loan spell at Mickleover Sports in 2013 before progressing to earn a professional contract and represented Derby in the U21 Development League at the end of the 2014 campaign.

He moved to Sheffield United on a five-month contract at the start of the 2014/15 season and played for the Blades’ U21 side.

Ilkeston-born Berry, 20, spent the last part of the 2014/15 season on loan at National League side Welling United, ironically helping them to survival at Alfreton’s expense, the Reds being relegated on goal difference ahead of Welling on the last day of the season.

He made nine appearances for the Wings, scoring in a 2-1 home win over Wrexham.

Reds manager Law feels Berry has lots of potential. “We tried to sign him last season on loan but we just missed out when he went to Welling.

“We have watched him a few times. He did well as a youngster and did well at Welling in the Conference Premier.

“We feel he is the right sort to come and get back playing and doing well and we think there might well be some mileage in him on the development side of things like the Aden Flint and Kyle McFadzean scenario,” added Law.
