Alfreton Town co-founder Tom McRoy passes away

Mr McRoy played an instrumental role in founding the current club back in 1959 and spent several decades working as assistant secretary, secretary, deputy chairman and chairman.

In later years, his loyalty and hard work to his beloved Reds was rewarded by the club who made him a Life Member and also a Vice President.

A spokesman for Alfreton Town said: “A passionate football man, it is perhaps somewhat fitting that he passed away on the night his beloved Sunderland also reached a major cup final. He will most certainly be looking down with pride.

“A true legend in every sense of the word, Tom commanded the utmost respect not just within the club, but also in far reaching football circles.

“He was a total gentleman who had time for everyone and limitless stories to tell.

“Alfreton Town Football Club extend sincerest condolences to son Ian and the rest of Tom’s family on their sad loss.

Rest in peace Tom, you will be sorely missed by everyone at Alfreton Town Football Club.”

One of his proudest moments with the club was the winning of the Conference North title in the 2010/11 season when he took great delight at celebrating the success with the players after the game.
