Alfreton Town manager Nicky Law is keeping his feet firmly on the ground despite seeing his new-look squad get off to a flying pre-season start.

The Reds are unbeaten in three games and followed up an impressive 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday last Saturday by pulling off a notable 3-2 home win over Sky Bet Championship side Rotherham United on Tuesday evening.

The Reds twice came from behind to claim the victory and Law had plenty of praise for his new charges.

“The fitness levels were great, I think we passed the ball well, our movement was good, we defended well and scored three goals. We could have had more, their keeper has made two or three top class saves” reflected Law.

“I am not getting too excited but we are setting standards and we have now got something to build on. The whole mood in the camp is totally different to last season.

“It has been like a breath of fresh air, young lads full of enthusiasm, some with points to prove, some wanting to kick on.

“It gives me as a manager encouragement. It is black and white from last season, absolutely chalk from cheese. It is refreshing and maybe it is something we should have done last year.

“We have been back eleven days, had four training sessions and three games and I think the most pleasing thing is that this young group are willing to learn. They are fit, athletic and capable but they are also carrying instructions out. Hopefully they can see there is a means to an end and they proved it against Rotherham. We asked for certain things and I think the players took it to another level tonight.

“To go a goal down was disappointing, and, if anything I thought we were the better team. We just kept going and deservedly won the game.

“We have got a real good balance about us with plenty of left-footed players which is something we have not had for a long time. Everyone has done well. It is a case of so far so good, but it is only pre-season.

“Anyone watching the Rotherham game as a neutral would have wondered which one was the Championship side to be fair. We have got a different type and calibre of player in this time around. We have had to build another team, I think it is my eighth different team at Alfreton, and hopefully we have got it right” ended Law.
