Alfreton in trouble with struggling away form

Alfreton Town suffered their seventh away Skrill Premier defeat from nine outings when Tamworth were victorious by a solitary 23rd minute Nick Chadwick goal on Tuesday night.

Unchanged for the fourth successive game, the Reds tried hard, although they did not start competing until they had gone behind.

But there were opportunities for Paul Clayton to play the final 20 minutes after a long spell injured and a cameo appearance was made by Alastair Taylor after a loan spell.

The goal stemmed from a Tony Capaldi free-kick that Reds’ keeper Ross Atkins could not hold, leaving Chadwick with a tap-in.

After the restart, Alfreton launched an attack with Job Ayo Akinde’s shot looping up off Capaldi to be gathered by home keeper Cameron Belford.

Justin Richards flashed a cross through Alfreton’s goalmouth with no-one able to connect, then Chris Westwood’s shot was parried by Belford before Tom Shaw fired wide. Jake Speight had three chances in the final ten minutes of the first half and the striker did manage to go close with yet another chance as Alfreton pushed for an equaliser.

Shaw missed after Akinde had held up a Wood cross, then the midfielder almost atoned with a drive that Belford needed to punch. A cross from sub Daniel Meadows was palmed on to the upright by the keeper with 20 minutes left, then following a goalmouth scramble at the other end it was Ben Richards-Everton’s to be denied by the post. Wood saw a header cleared off the line in the 77th minute, before Lloyd Kerry was let in with Atkins parrying the shot. During added time, Meadows was inches over the bar with a volley from Wood’s long throw.
