The club announced today that the stopper has joined the Reds, following his release by National League side Torquay United.

Spiess, 21, was on trial with Alfreton last summer but began the season as first choice with The Gulls and made 18 appearances, before falling out of favour.

The 6ft 2ins German was released by Notts County at the end of the 2014/15 campaign, ending a five year spell at Meadow Lane.

Whilst with the Magpies he had loan spells with Lewes, Corby Town and Bristol Rovers last season.

In a twist of fate, he lines up against a former Alfeton custodian today, in the formidable shape of Avenue’s number one Jon Stewart, who had two spells with the Reds.
