It was a point gained for AFC Mansfield on Saturday, after a lacklustre second half almost handed in-form Knaresborough Town all three points.
The Bulls went in front in the first half through Chris Timons, but Knaresborough clawed their way back into the game and had it not been for some top class keeping by Jason White, it wouldn’t have ended 1-1.
The home side had the chance to go in front straight from the kick-off, a poor back pass from Will Lenehan had keeper Jack Rushworth tackling the onrushing Dean Rick.
The ball fell to Craig Mitchell just outside the box but the striker lifted his effort over the bar.
Knaresborough showed their attacking prowess on seven minutes when Phil Buxton headed off the line from a Fraser Lancaster header.
At the other end Brad Wilson saw his headed effort well covered by Rushworth.
The Bulls went in front on 17 minutes, Timons getting on the end of a Jake Park corner to power his header past Rushworth.
It was end to end stuff with both sides having chances, The Bulls probably just shading the half.
Phil Buxton fired wide on 23 minutes from 25 yards and Jonty Maullin shot straight at White on the half hour mark.
Rushworth did well to deny Mitchell, turning his rasping drive away for a corner and Park headed over when the visitors failed to clear their lines from a corner on 38 minutes.
The slender one goal lead was under threat two minutes into the restart when Knaresborough were awarded a harsh penalty but White had different ideas. His full length dive to his left denied Graham Whitehead the equaliser.
AFC’s ability to give the ball away at the drop of the hat and Knaresborough’s growing confidence were signs that the game was certainly not over.
A move on 76 minutes started, orchestrated and finished by Ryan Williams should have doubled the home advantage.
Some neat short passing around the edge of the box ended with Williams hitting a half volley that Rushworth somehow managed to turn over the bar.
Two minutes later and Knaresborough substitute Gary Collier was given space and time to fire past White to give Knaresborough just reward for their hard work.
White made another superb save to deny a winner for Collier a few minutes before the end and a minute before time Williams volleyed wide from the edge of the box.
Both teams could have won the game but a draw was probably a fair result.
AFC Mansfield are at home again next Saturday when they entertain Glasshoughton Welfare at Forest Town Arena.
