First win for Sewell as title chase hots up

Dave Sewell pulled off his first win of the season in James Maude AC’s match on Portland Waters.

Fishing top two and two on pellet and feeding micros out in front and down the edge on meat, he took a great weight of 149lb 7oz to the scales from peg 21.

Tony Smith managed second place after a very eventful day with trashed rigs, landing handle coming off, and a float that skimmed the bridge of his nose, and to top it all a broken number four section.

He soldiered on, catching down both edges to land some cracking carp to boost his weight to 110lb 4oz from peg 12. ‘Mr Consistent’ Dave Lilliman had yet another top three place with 86lb 5oz.

The battle goes on between Kyle Wood and Kev Brown for the club’s Premiership title with third place still up for grabs and in the club’s match the week before at Little John Lakes Robin Hood Lake, Wood kept his hopes intact with victory.

He proved his class both in the draw bag and on the bank as, operating from peg one he fished scoop to the island and paste at 8m to take a steady stream of carp for 123lb 1oz.

Andy Topham has finished second on all three matches at Little John, pushing Kyle all the way from peg 18 with a very respectable 113lb 6oz.

Top place for the Championship is still between Gary Butcher and Paul Skeldon, with third place still on offer as it starts to get serious on who will be promoted and who will be relegated.

Church Warsop & District AC’s latest outing to Bank End Fishery’s match lake proved to be a fairly tight match with only 5oz between the top two.

Drawing peg 19 and switching between shallow tactics and the short pole, Mick Smith just pip Nigel McCarthy on peg22, Smith with 93lb 3oz and McCarthy with 92lb 14oz.

Travelling partners Martyn Brown and Will Cresswell fished identical methods in the Sunday Evening Open at Sherwood Forest Park Farm Fishery Holmedale Lake, with pole and paste down the margins, but it was Brown again at the top of the list with 193lb 1oz to Cresswell’s 188lb 1oz.

The Tuesday Open on Sherwood Lake saw winner Dave Round struggle to get the ide going on his usual pole and caster tactics, so he fished the pole and worm down the long margin on peg 41, landing carp to 8lb and skimmers to 2lb in his 90lb 7oz catch.

Mick Burrell was runner-up with a 69lb bag.

Nigel Shipman drew peg 14 in the Wednesday Open on Holmedale and, fishing the pole and meat out at 6m and pole and paste over dead maggots down the margin, he caught all match, weighing in a massive match-winning 193lb 12oz. In second with 179lb 4oz Martyn Brown fished the pole and paste out at 12m and down both margins for carp to 10lb.
