After losing the toss, Tom Poynton, making his first appearance since 2013, hit 27 off 18 balls, while Hashim Amla top scored with 29, but five wickets from debutant Matthew Fisher restricted the visitors to 128.

Ben Cotton was the pick of the Derbyshire bowlers in reply returning figures of 2-19 off his four overs, but it wasn’t enough as the Vikings claimed a seven-wicket win.

“Obviously we wanted to come up and make a good start in the competition but certain things didn’t go our way and there were certain things we got wrong,” NatWest T20 Blast captain Durston said.

“After a good power play start we kind of capitulated a bit and to lose five for 15. It’s always going to be difficult then to mount a challenge to get a score to defend but I thought the boys stuck at the task in the field very well.

“We addressed the situation of the game and the wicket slightly wrong. Without getting any partnerships going not only did we lose overs but we lost wickets and the innings really fell flat.

“We weren’t able to launch to get up to 150-160 where we could have defended that and it would have been a totally different game.

“We can take something from it but out overwhelming feeling is disappointment.

“But it’s one game and we move on to Leicester next week. We’ll draw a line under this, analyse it on Monday morning and come back stronger next Friday.”
