Unbeaten century for Joe Root's brother as Notts 2nd storm to victory
The 24-year-old Root raced to an unbeaten 139 off 128 balls in the visitors’ total of 332-5 from their 50 overs at Finedon Dolben. Sam Wood (5-38) then snared five wickets to destroy the home side’s lower order and secure a 129-run success for the Outlaws, who were captained by first-team batsman Greg Smiths.
Smith won the toss and elected to bat before racing to 26 off 19 balls to get his side off to a flying start. He became the first of two quick wickets for Palash Joshi, the second of which was Wood for ten, but that brought Root to the crease and, supported by Joe Barrett (48), Anuj Dal (25), Lyndon James (27) and Dominic Brown (44 off 28 balls), the left-hander struck 14 fours and a six, guiding Notts to their unassailable total.
Brown ripped out three of the Steelbacks’ top four, all lbw, before Wood’s off-spin did the rest, including the dismissal of Harry Adair for 80, as Northants were bowled out in 44 overs for 203.
