SLIDESHOW: Cuckney top as weather ruins weekend programme

The weather played havoc with the third round of Notts Premier League fixtures as half of the scheduled matches were abandoned before they could reach a conclusion.

At Langwith Road, Cuckney remained the only side with a perfect record as they swept aside Caythorpe.

The visitors’ skipper, James Hawley, won his first toss of the season, elected to bat and that was that.

None of Caythorpe’s top three could muster a run as Lewis Bramley and Tom Driver took control with the ball.

Only the showers and a breezy 66 from 47 balls by James Hemmings provided any resistance. Bramley finished with figures of 4-45 and Driver 4-28 as Caythorpe were bundled out for 120 in 36 overs.

Cuckney went about their chase in relatively serene fashion, openers Adam Burgess (32) and Luke Thomas (29) getting halfway to the target before Jim Hindson was able to make the breakthrough. His three late wickets secured the visitors their solitary point of the day as the Bears completed a six wicket win in the 29th over.

Clifton Village kept up the pressure on Cuckney with a rain reduced victory over Radcliffe-on-Trent at Clifton Campus.

The home side won the toss and put their visitors in, after a delayed start reduced the match to 46 overs a side.

Martin Weightman was the dominant factor as wickets fell on a regular basis.

Only Josh Mierkalns was able to stick around, striking 70, Weightman finishing with figures of 6-20 from 12.4 overs, Radcliffe reaching 138 all out in the 45th over.

Clifton’s reply was steady as they passed the target in the 37th over for five down, Richard Harris (36) and Scott McNeill (30) leading the way.

Rolls Royce Leisure moved into third in the table with a three wicket victory over Kimberley Institute at Derby.

The visitors won the toss and, batting first, amassed 193 for eight in their 50 overs.

George Bacon led the way for the Institute with 44 runs, backed up by Sam Johnson with 41.

The pair’s 51-run stand helped them recover from 94-5, Dane Straw the pick of the Rolls bowlers, claiming 4-51.

The hosts needed just 44 overs to overhaul their target, Shaun Levy proving the mainstay of the innings, contributing 74 runs, Matthew Roberts (33), sharing in a stand of 71 for the second wicket, and Dan Birch, blasting four sixes on his way to 32 from 19 balls, providing the assists.

Bacon completed a fine all-round day, taking 4-64 as a late flurry of wickets took the score from 170-3 to 196-7.

The rain prevented what looked set to be a tense finish at Ordsall Bridon as the game was abandoned after 86 overs.

The home side won the toss and opted to bat first, an opening stand of 69 becoming a minor collapse as they slipped to 116-6.

James Brice, with 33, and Aqab Ahmed, who hit seven sixes on his way to 71 from 51 balls, helped raise the total to 230-9 from their 49 overs. Simon Webster’s 5-48 was the pick of the bowling.

The Academy reply got off to a slow start, as they fell to 26-3. But Hassan Azad (64) and Adam Tillcock (63) got the innings back on track with a stand of 103.

Paul Franks and Simon Webster had moved the score to 197-5 with 13 overs remaining when the weather delays brought proceedings to an end.

At Birchover Park, the visiting Welbeck Colliery skipper won the toss and invited their hosts to bat first.

A stand of 103 between Akhil Patel (76) and Bilal Shafayat (59) was the centrepiece of the West Indian Cavaliers innings, an innings captain Shafayat declared closed after 39.5 overs with the total 192-6, Robert French taking 3-34 from his four overs. No further play was possible.

The days’ first abandonment occurred at The Fieldings, where Mansfield Hosiery Mills gave Plumtree the first chance to bat.

The Plums had made 35-2 from 12 overs when the weather claimed victory.
