Rain holds up Notts’ victory push

Rain frustrated Nottinghamshire’s quest to beat Hampshire on day four at the Ageas Bowl.

Play was delayed for the whole of the morning session after dark clouds and rain were a constant above Southampton – the umpires not even scheduling an inspection as they abandoned any hope of morning play just after midday.

Notts are expected to declare with a lead of 391 if the weather clears up in the afternoon – giving themselves a maximum of two sessions to bowl Hampshire out.

The visitors are in the stronger match position after centuries by Brendan Taylor and Alex Hales , who celebrated an England call-up yesterday.

Notts took a first innings lead of 95 after bowling Hampshire out for an unconvincing 276 before motoring at five an over on Tuesday evening to set an imperious total.
