Somerset won by 10 wickets

Somerset secured their second victory of the Specsavers County Championship season after totally dominating the final day of their match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Set to score just 100, the visitors romped to a 10-wicket triumph just before tea, with Marcus Trescothick and Johann Myburgh reaching their target in only 16.5 overs.

Trescothick, who scored 218 before being last out in the first innings, took the opportunity to plunder an unbeaten 37, getting his runs from 46 balls, with eight fours. Johann Myburgh added an undefeated 58 to his first innings knock of 54.

The contest had begun to nose-dive away from the home side during the morning period, when only 42 runs were scored in the two hour session.

Somerset’s seam attack bossed things from the start, admittedly in favourable overcast conditions.

Jim Allenby, who removed Michael Lumb on the third evening, set the ball rolling by adding two further scalps to his collection, to finish with three for 23.

Brendan Taylor made 28 before falling lbw to a delivery that kept a touch low and Riki Wessels failed to get off the mark before edging to Trescothick at slip.

Jake Libby, after his first innings score of 90, battled his way to 44 before chopping Craig Overton onto his stumps.

Lewis Gregory accounted for both Chris Read and Luke Fletcher in the same over. Read was especially unfortunate; having pulled a short ball away for six he knocked off a bail as he stepped back. Four deliveries later Fletcher’s off stick was spectacularly uprooted.

Imran Tahir bravely tried to help Samit Patel steer the innings towards calmer waters but he was bowled by Jack Leach, soon after heaving the spinner over the ropes at long on.

With Brett Hutton absent, through injury, Patel had no option but to try and muscle a few late runs but he picked out deep midwicket to hand Gregory figures of three for 27

Somerset duly completed their third consecutive win over Nottinghamshire, with Myburgh putting some gloss on the performance by hitting Tahir for three consecutive sixes as he brought up his 50 from 51 balls, with six fours and those three maximums.

Having been 196 without loss on the first day, Nottinghamshire’s subsequent collapse leaves them without a championship victory since the opening round of matches this season and they remain perilously close to the foot of the Division One table.

Somerset collect 23 points from the contest and move up to fifth in the table, sandwiched between Lancashire and Yorkshire.
