James Taylor celebrates 20th first-class century to give Notts hope

James Taylor’s 20th first-class century kept Nottinghamshire from implosion on the third day of their rain-affected LV=County Championship match against Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

In what is effectively a two-day match after rain permitted only four overs on the first two days, Nottinghamshire went into tea on 216 for five with Taylor on 114 (173 balls, 14 fours).

The England player had his good fortune, dropped on eight, 22 and 75, but played some lovely strokes in difficult conditions to keep his team afloat against fine swing-bowling by Keith Barker.

The left-armer took three wickets, including new England call-up Alex Hales for just six, in the morning session before Jonathan Trott removed Rikki Wessels with the last ball before lunch.

Nottinghamshire resumed after lunch on 105 for four and then lost Samit Patel, bowled behind his legs by Barker.

But Chris Read (38 not out) settled in alongside Taylor who reached his century from 151 balls - pointedly not applauded by Warwickshire’s players who were convinced that he should have been given out, caught-behind, off Trott the ball before.
