FEATURE: Underwood MWCC laying the foundations for 125th year ahead of the new season

The club, who were formed in 1894 and now field three men’s teams, are poised to toast their 125th anniversary in a few years’ time.

2019 may be some way off but vice-chairman Chris Brown says putting youth development at the forefront of the club’s ethos will stand them in good stead for that special date.

He says the Church Lane club is always on the lookout for fresh talent as they look to improve all areas.

He said: “We’re not far off our 125th anniversary.

“We’re always looking for players to bolster the squad.”

“At present, our player ages range between 17 to 65.

“We can’t always get youngsters to fill all the slots so we want youngsters and more experienced players to hopefully join us.

“There’s always lots to play for but we need enthusiasm and commitment from our players.

“One week you’ve got 30 wanting to play and the next you might have just ten.

“It’s about getting that consistency at this level so that we can really push forward as a club.”

In terms of on-the-field matters, last season’s great escape offers hope that the club can push on next term.

The first team, who ply their trade in Division D of the South Nottinghamshire League, survived by the skin of their teeth last term.

Chris said: “Last season we just avoided relegation on the last day.

“It was really tight - our last pair needed 51 and thankfully we reached it.

“It was one of those games were there was a middle-order collapse but the last two dug in and the closer we got to the end the more the opposition lost concentration and that played into our hands.”

The new season begins on April 16 and Chris naturally hopes for a memorable campaign for all three sides.

He said: “Our Sunday side got promoted last year to the first division of the Mansfield and District League.

“We want to maintain that and if possible challenge to go into the Premier.

“As for the firsts, we’d like to get promoted but also use our seconds to develop players.”

Chris is keen to stress that there is a real family feel at the club, as shown by their commitment to getting involved with good causes locally.

He added: “We’ve got a member of the team who is a scout leader.

“Every year they have a gala day, which he helps run and they help out with the ground.

“We’ve also contributed to this year’s Underwood Scarecrow festival just before the season starts.

“It’s just one of the things we like to do to show we’re not just a cricket club.”

Chris now hopes more people with join the ‘family’ as they prepare for a special birthday in three year’s time.
