Bassetlaw League round-up: Rain helps Hosiery Mills return to top spot

Mills were held to a winning draw by Retford, taking 17 points, but it was enough to see them go top by just four points as leaders Papplewick & Linby could only achieve 11 points when their fixture with Edwinstowe fell foul of the weather after 16 wickets had fallen.

Papplewick & Linby will now hope they can overcome Hosiery Mills going in this weekend’s key clash at Papplewick Hall.

The Hosiery Mills fixture saw 100 overs bowled and over 500 runs scored with 13 wickets falling.

Mills won the toss and chose to bat, a 127-run partnership then accumulated by Matt New with 49 and Kamal Manek scoring 63 of his 71, before captain Tom New followed his brother, similarly making a score of 42, as Mansfield Hosiery Mills made 269-5

In reply once again Retford’s innings was reliant on Chandra Kumara, who scored another 100 with Matt Wright once again in inspiring form with four wickets as Retford received a losing draw to take an extra two points stopping Mansfield Hosiery Mills adding any further result points.

Only eight Retford wickets fell as Mills took 17 points, ensuring they returned to top spot in the League for the first time since the second weekend of the season.

In their game, Papplewick & Linby started brightest, reaching 97-1 with Justin Braithwaite scoring 51, and Alex Lloyd 39, before an unfamiliar collapse as the next nine wickets fell for 90 runs.

They were all out for 187 meaning they only attained three batting points with the bowling of Paul Benson and Chris Dobson in tandem taking the early innings impetus away from Papplewick towards Edwinstowe as they took 4-15, and 3-55 respectively.

In reply, Edwinstowe would have been the happier of the two sides to see the rain come as they needed 31 runs to win while Papplewick & Linby required four wickets as the tail had come in, with Edwinstowe reaching 157-6, Adam Dutton and Tom Ward top-scoring with 42 and 44.

The only other game to be completed was at Central Avenue between mid-table Worksop and in-form North Wheatley with Leverton.

This match started with North Wheatley with Leverton inviting hosts Worksop to bat first.

Worksop batted their allotted overs and narrowly missed out on full batting points with Jamie Bovill restricting Worksop with 3-63.

Worksop’s highest run scorer Bernhard Beukman scored another 100, his fourth of the season as he amassed 101 to become the rock of the Worksop innings as they scored 194-5 with North Wheatley with Leverton taking two bowling points.

In reply the good batting conditions were exposed as North Wheatley with Leverton scored the runs required with little trouble as Matthew Loates scored 104; this fixture the first of the season to have a centurion for both sides.

North Wheatley with Leverton were also indebted to an unbeaten 40 from Peter John-Jansen as they won convincingly by nine wickets to take 17 points while Worksop took just three points from the match.

Kiveton v Clipstone was a match in which both teams took 11 points as the weather curtailed the match.

Clipstone batted first, scoring 179 all out before Kiveton Park replied with 153-8 before the rain intervened with the game heading to a nailbiting finish with 27 runs need for a Kiveton win and two wickets for a Clipstone win.

The fixture at Ryton Road didn’t end in a result with 93 overs bowled and 15 wickets falling. Glapwell elected to bat after winning the toss, making 232-7 with high scores coming from Luke Smith (56), and John Skinner (65), as they shared a partnership of 121 runs.

In reply, Anston looked like reaching their target for the first couple of hours of their reply at 108-2 before a collapse sparked a clear chance for Glapwell to take the much needed win as the next six wickets fell for 74 runs before the weather halted play once again.

The fixture at Goosedale Lane saw only 58 overs bowled as the shortest game of the day.

Notts & Arnold Amateur scored 269-6, taking four crucial bonus batting points as the weather prevented a result being reached.

There was time for Thoresby Colliery to start their innings which lasted eight overs, scoring 37-1.

Notts & Arnold Amateur missed out on the opportunity to gain any bowling points.

Thoresby Colliery took eight points while Notts & Arnold Amateur took 10, leaving them 10th and sixth in the table.
