Despite a shaky start, when they were trapped in their own 22 and fell 7-0 down, Ashfield proved too strong for their West Midlands opponents after receiving an inspiring pep talk from captain Leanne Reeves.

The win kept them in third place in the Midlands First Division of the Women’s National Challenge and put them in the perfect frame of mind for their next league match against Rugby Lionesses on Sunday, March 12.

Ashfield got on the scoresheet when Nicola Wallace crashed over the line, and then flanker Vicki Fegan made a fantastic run to score a second try.

Five Ways squared things up at 12-12 by half-time before Ashfield showed their dominance in the second period. Winger Jess Cranmer beat four defenders to put them ahead and then flanker Elena Martin-Lopez squeezed over the line, with conversions from Chip Harrison taking the score to 26-12.

Ill discipline led to two yellow cards and reduced the home side to 13 players late on when Five Ways pulled back a try. But Ashfield held on.
