Captain Gorman hauls leaders Clipstone out of trouble

Title-chasing Clipstone and Bilsthorpe reinforced their position at the top of the Bassetlaw League's Championship with a narrow two-wicket victory at home to Worksop.

Clipstone and Bilsthorpe bowler Mohamed Althaf Anwardeen on his way to a five-wicket haul against Worksop.

But they were thankful for a vital innings from experienced skipper Jason Gorman after they looked in all sorts of trouble at 79-6 and 110-7, chasing 176 for victory.

Gorman went in at number nine and soon lost Thomas Ward, who had been the mainstay of the innings with a patient 41 (five fours) from 85 balls, leaving Clipstone on 117-8.

But the captain dug them out of trouble with an unbeaten 46, including eight boundaries, which squeezed his team home in the 46th over. At the other end, tailender Ian Woodall survived 39 deliveries for just four not out in a matchwinning partnership worth 59.

Earlier Woodall had taken 3-42 and Mohamed Althaf Anwardeen 5-43, only for Tim Smith to play a heroic captain’s innings for Worksop, hitting 104 (15 fours).
