Callum wins Portland Cup

Callum Denby-Whitt (16) won Sutton Harriers’ Portland Cup as 40 club members turned out for the final handicap of the season – a 5.8-mile route from Teversal Visitors’ Centre along part of the old Silverhill Colliery site and Teversal/Pleasley trails.

The men competed for the oldest trophy held by the club, donated to the club in 1910 by the late Duke of Portland and was fought out by two of the younger members of the club.

Callum Ball (15) and Denby-Whitt battled hard with Callum Denby-Whitt proving to be the stronger of the two, winning by 23 seconds with James Simpson taking third place 15 seconds behind Callum Ball.

The ladies competed for the Draycott Cup, which was donated by an ex-member of the club Barry Draycott, and it proved to be a lot closer race with only 14 seconds being between the first four finishers.

The race was won by newcomer Kerry Shooter in a handicap time of 36-16, closely followed in second place by Sarah Allcock 36-24 and Chloe Paylor in third in 36-29.

On a warm and sunny Sunday, 14,000 runners took part in the 2014 Robin Hood Marathon and Half Marathon including seven members of Sutton Harriers.
