Brown wins tight battle on Holmedale

A very tight battle between the top three in Sherwood Forest Farm Fishery’s Sunday Open match on Holmedale Lake saw Carl Brown come out on top.

Fishing the pole and pellet out at 14m, after a slow start he soon had the fish lining up, landing 20 carp to 6lb and a dozen roach to 12oz.

Phil Carline, in second place, was just one fish short of the winning post, also landing carp to 6lb on the pole and pellet, while in third spot Norman caught carp to 8lb early in the match on ledgered popped-up bread disks, but struggled in the last half of the match, watching his early lead go down to third place.

Open Match, Holmedale Lake, Sunday 16th February, 23 fished: 1st Carl Brown Sherwood Forest Fishery peg 51, 58-0-0, 2nd Phil Carline Subfish, peg 54, 56-8-0, 3rd Norman Powers Sherwood Forest Fishery peg 49, 56-0-0, 4th Colin Perry Sensas Mansfield peg 36, 40-12-0, 5th Craig Brazier Sherwood Forest Fishery peg 19, 38-14-0, 6th Nigel Shipman Sherwood Forest Fishery peg 17, 36-15-0.

There were only three anglers left to weigh in at the end of the match because of the very strong winds and monsoon rain, but it was Andy Lakey who stuck it out to end up in top spot in the Wednesday Open on Holmedale Lake.

Fishing a small pellet feeder cast to the island, he landed five carp, one bream and a chub for 22lb 1oz.

Two late bream to 4lb won the day for Fred Bispham in the Tuesday Open on Sherwood Forest Farm Park Fishery’s Sherwood Lake.

Fred fished the waggler and maggot cast 30m out for roach and skimmers to 12oz and the two late bream edged him ahead of his travelling mate John Holmes with 15lb 10oz.

John fished the pole and maggot over ground bait for 12lb 12oz of skimmers to 1lb.

Gale force winds battered the fishery for round three of the Winter League, but the fish certainly didn’t seem to mind as excellent sport was had by everyone on Sherwood Lake.

Coming out on top from peg 25 was Ian Boyd with 29lb 9oz, including a 10lb specimen, all taken on method feeder to the far bank.

Pushing him all the way from peg 23 was Joe Wheeldon with 27lb 10oz of carp and skimmers on the pole and pellet at 11m.

Wayne Heywood claimed 3rd spot with 17lb 5oz of ide, skimmers and perch.

Winter League Round Three, Sherwood Lake, 20 fished: 1st Ian Boyd, Woodhouse Angling Centre 29-09, 2nd Joe Wheeldon, Rivendell 27-10, 3rd Wayne Heywood, Subfish 17-04, 4th Ivor Birkin, Rivendell, 12-05, 5th Jim Mahon, Glapwell AC, 11-02.

John Urruty came out on top in the Tuesday Open on Sherwood on 28th January.

He fished the waggler and maggot, cast to the middle of the lake, loose feeding every cast.

After a slow start he started catching a small roach every cast, landing over 100 fish to 4oz, weighing a total of 16lb 8oz.
