Two out of two for Sutton pro Boxer Turner

Sutton professional boxer Jordon Turner (19) made it two wins out of two with victory over debutant Josh O’Donnell in Derby.

Bantamweight Turner joined Huthwaite Boxing Club as an amateur but last summer he signed a three-year management contract with manager/trainer Scott Calow, who said: “The intention is to move him up to eight round level by the end of the year.

“Next year we hope to be Boxing for the Midlands title over 10 rounds and Jordon’s ultimate goal is the British title.

“Jordon has been sparring highly rated flyweight Jamie Williams and he’s going to be sparring English champion Louis Norman in a couple of weeks.”

Also working alongside Calow to develop Turner is strength/conditioning coach Richard Ashley.

The fight against O’Donnell was a difficult one for his second pro fight. O’Donnell had a lot more amateur experience than Turner, but the Sutton youngster stuck to the plan and kept the pressure on the Birmingham man.

He was physically stronger and, with his improving technique, Turner won every round.

“O’Donnell had a good amateur background, winning 10 of 20 fights, but you don’t know what you’re getting with someone making a debut,” said Turner. “I knew he was going to be ambitious and try and get a win.

“But I did what was needed to be done and listed to my manager/trainer in the corner.”

On turning professional, he added: “I am over the moon – it couldn’t have gone any better.

“It is hard work, training twice a day six days a week and fitting it around my college course.

“I am down at DW Sports for my strength and conditioning, then down to Huthwaite for fitness training and conditioning as well as sparring in between with some very good sparring partners.

“I hope to get six three rounders in by the end of the year and move up to eight three rounders which means I can go for the English title. So it’s all moving in the right direction.

“Scott is a great manager and I plan to stay with him for the rest of my career. I have known him a very long time, all through my amateur career since I started and then turning pro, so we have a very good relationship.”

During his amateur career since 2008, Turner had 27 fights, and lost out when boxing for the Notts & Lincs Challenge Belt.

“Brian Yemm had a big impact on my amateur career, taking me all over the country to box as an amateur, but he sadly passed away last year,” said Turner.

“I think I am more suited to professional boxing as I’ve got a better engine, getting better as the rounds go on.

Turner’s professional debut was in December against the tough Francis Croes, who had 20 pro fights under his belt, but again Turner won every round.

His next fight will be in Nottingham on 19th June along with four other professionals from Calow’s Huthwaite-based stable.

Turner added: “I’m always looking for sponsors to help out with funding towards my training routine, correct equipment, foods for my diet to make the weight, and also travel.”

Also on the Derby bill, another Huthwaite boxer, Connaire Seery, beat Tomas Samusas of Lithuania.
