Manager Calow confident of big season for his Huthwaite ABC boxers

Calow currently has ten professional boxers on his books, and he saw three of them chalk up wins in the space of a few days earlier this summer.

Sleaford cruiserweight Dan Cooper, described by Calow as “technically good, very strong and fit,” made it back-to-back victories with a points success in Worksop.

Rising star Nathan Kirk was a points winner in Rotherham, and the Huthwaite club were also delighted to celebrate an explosive debut from Saby Mann.

Ring legend Ricky ‘The Hitman’ Hatton, former world champion, promoted the show in Cannock, Staffordshire, where Mann made his first appearance, and he witnessed the Derby super-welterweight show impressive power as he walloped Daniel Mickleburgh inside three rounds.

The teenager’s next fight will be in Chigwell, Essex in October when Calow hopes another dynamic display could secure a promotional deal with renowned veteran manager Frank Warren, who has handled fighters such as Hatton, Joe Calzaghe, Nigel Benn and Amir Khan over the years.

“We have a good team at the moment,” said Calow, who had about 30 amateur bouts himself for Huthwaite ABC before a brief professional career.

“I work with great trainers such as Adam Butler and Steve Seery and even though we’re from different areas, we are always talking on the phone and making plans.”

Current plans include an eight-rounder for bantamweight Jordan Turner, while Calow also has high hopes for Kirk. The Nottingham lightweight has won seven of his nine fights, and Calow said: “We’re looking to push Nathan on next season.

“Because I work with different promoters, I can keep the lads busy. Even the ones who box away from home always go to win. All my fighters are prospects.”

Nick Golubs, a super-welterweight from Mansfield, is a new addition to Calow’s stable. Calow says “the 20-year-old, along with Lincoln’s talented Jordan McCloughlin, will debut in September”.
