Booster for Sting youngsters

As part of the Sutton Sting NIHL1 commitment to junior development, coach Darlow and players James Goodman, Nat Rose and Jake Gamwell have been attending the Lammas Centre on Monday evenings to help out with the junior section of the club and help bring together the two parts of a club that plays its home games 25 miles apart.

Over the coming weeks more of the Sutton Sting roster will be attending the junior training sessions to pass on knowledge, help with technique and try to pass on the wealth of experience to the Sutton Sting NIHL1 players of the future.

Coach Darlow was impressed by the response of his players when the call came to help out and said: “We all remember how we pushed ourselves that bit harder as kids when the players we looked up to were on the ice helping us, and that’s the type of response we’ve seen on the ice over the past couple of weeks from the kids

“We are a club that has a well-defined progression plan in place and, with the help of our senior guys alongside a strong junior coaching set-up ruin by head coach Bob Saunders, we want to pull as many juniors through into the Sting ranks as we can on an ongoing basis.

“There is nothing better than giving back to the sport we all love and nothing better do it in the positive environment that is Sutton Sting.”

As thoughts turned back to NIHL1 league action coach Darlow made it clear that he would love to see as many of the juniors and their families at this weekend’s game against Manchester as well as some new faces to the sport.

“This weekend’s game is going to be another barn burner at iceSheffield, so bring as many people as you can and watch your Sutton Sting do battle with Manchester in what will be a day paced, hard fought game,” he said.

Sutton Sting U10s made the short trip up the M1 to ice Sheffield to take part in a Midlands Development event especially for U10 players.

Hosted by the Sheffield Junior Academy, Sutton’s U10’s took to the ice with players from across the Midlands with proceedings being about playing and player development.

With cross-ice, jamborees and the Sting’s very own Little League initiatives there’s something of a buzz around hockey’s grassroots and the Sting are very keen to see their youngest and brightest stars take full advantage.

The iceSheffield event provided four hours of competition time for more than a hundred kids which is a month’s worth of hockey crammed in to one afternoon.

The next big day for U10s is at Lammas in two weeks time when round two of Little League gets underway.
