Dedicated and talented athletes, volunteers and clubs from across Bolsover were honoured for their achievements at the district council's annual sports awards ceremony.

Nearly 100 people packed into the council’s headquarters at Clowne to celebrate the sporting achievements of individuals and organisations over the past 12 months.

Among the winners was Jamie Caven (sportsman of the year), from South Normanton, who is currently ranked 23rd in the world of darts -- a terrific achievement considering he can only see out of one eye.

The junior team of the year was won by Anthony Bek Community Primary School’s sportshall athletics squad, who won the Shirebrook schools cluster competition as well as the Bolsover district competition and then went on to represent the district and be crowned the Derbyshire county champions at the first time of asking.

The community award went to 79-year old Neville Hardy, from South Normanton Colts FC who, for the past ten years, has undertaken a variety of roles at the club, including groundsman, caretaker and general handyman.

Bolsover District Council chairman, Coun Ken Walker, who presented the winners with their awards, said: “We have had everything from international stars

playing darts and football to dedicated volunteers and coaches who help clean out toilets, put up nets and spend hours training other people. That’s the true

spirit of sport.

“I have stood here for more than ten years now, and I’m still amazed at the amount, and quality, of talent that we have here in Bolsover. Long may that continue. My congratulations go to all the winners, but also to everyone else who was nominated and spends time dedicating their lives to a particular sport or organisation.”
