His girlfriend, Kelly Burkinshaw, also competed and came second in the U60-kilo female junior class, meaning both of them have now qualified to represent Great Britain at the World Championships in Ireland this October.

Spalding (24), who works and trains at Kirkby’s Festival Hall, came first in his weight class and got the best overall male lifter over 90kg, beating some tough competition from various countries, a superb effort to say he only joined the sport last year.

“It was a lot more difficult this year,” he said. “There are a lot more people in this class and they are a lot older than me, so I did a lot better than I thought I would.

The pair are now looking for some sponsorship help with the cost of getting over to Ireland to represent Great Britain.

Anyone who could help them is asked to contact Anthony via [email protected] or 07936642246.
