Amy on fast track to success

Former Mansfield gymnast Amy Tivey looks to be on a fast track to athletics success.

After a dramatic change of sport, the talented 12-year-old took the County Championships by storm by winning three sprint goal medals.

A regular medal winner as a gymnast, Amy decided to retire from that sport two years ago at the age of 10 to make the most of her pace at sprinting after winning the Mansfield Fastest Kid competition and is now a rising star with Notts AC.

Amy said: “It was such a gamble leaving gymnastics, but I knew its where my heart lay after running in my first competition on the Berry Hill track representing my old primary school Wynndale.”

Amy now attend Brunts Academy school and trains three or four times a week at Notts AC under the expert coaching of double UK 2014 gold medalist Gia Skervin.

At the County Championships, held at Derby Moorways athletic track, Amy took gold in the 100m and 200m and also in the the girls4x4 relay.

She ran a personal best on the 100m with 13.6 and also a outstanding personal best in the 200m with 27.2, ranking her third in the UK on the athletic power of 10 results recorder.

Mum Angela said: “We are so proud of Amy. The commitment and dedication she has to her sport at such a young age is amazing.

“She’s out there wind, rain and snow, early mornings at Wollaton Hall and dark nights don’t stop her training, she just keeps going.

“We couldn’t respect her more and look forward to whatever the future holds for her in the sport.”

Also at the County Championships, William Bradley from the junior section of Sutton Harriers won the U17 400m in a personal best time of 51.77secs.

Natatia Williams, another U17 junior lady from Sutton Harriers competed in four Nottinghamshire County track and field events, winning silver in the discus with a PB of 24.07m, throwing the Javelin 23.15m and running the 300m with a PB of 48.39secs before ending with a PB in the 200m, finishing fifth in 30.42secs.

Her father, Robert Williams (35-49 age group) entered three events, finishing second in the discus (20.23m), third in the shot (6.63m), and fourth in the hammer (18.29m).

Sutton Harrier Sally Hughes, is preparing for an Ironman Triathlon later in the year and completed the Belvoir Middle Distance Triathlon at Belvoir Castle, ending in first place for her age group, ninth lady, and 65th overall out of 521 in a time of 4hrs 52mins.

First for Sally was the 1900m swim which was in a murky, shallow lake followed by a 500m run to the first transition.

Sally then changed onto her bike for the 74k cycle race, which was describe as a rolling three-lap route. Next came the 21k run, which was four laps with a climb towards the castle known as USN Hill.

Throughout the whole day, the weather was not kind to Sally with torrential rain.
