After walking football, it's time for walking netball!

You've heard of walking football. Now it's time for walking netball, a slowed-down version of the sport, designed for anyone looking to exercise in a relaxed and friendly environment.

In partnership with England Netball, Ashfield District Council is hosting new walking netball sessions at Lammas Leisure Centre in Sutton.

They will take place every Tuesday from 11 am to 12 noon and are open to all ages and abilities. Initially, the sessions will run for four weeks, but if they prove popular, they will continue.

The cost is £3 per session, although the initial one will be free, and there is no need to book beforehand.

The sessions are part of the council’s drive to get people more active and fit. The alternative version of the sport, which begins with a gentle warm-up, is proving to be very popular with women across the country, particularly those who might consider themselves past the age where they can play netball in competitive leagues or tournaments.

Coun Jim Aspinall, the council’s portfolio holder for health and wellbeing, said: “Walking netball is a great way for anyone, no matter what age nor fitness level, to be able to enjoy the game they love.

“This not only offers huge health benefits, but players can also enjoy the fun, laughter and camaraderie the social sessions bring.”

A spokeswoman for England Netball said: “Walking netball has evolved from a growing demand for walking sports. From those who dropped out of the sport because of injury to those who believed they had hung up their netball trainers many years ago, it is for everyone.”
