Adock enjoying his Glasgow experience

Adcock was afforded a day off competition after England’s mixed badminton team settled for silver against Malaysia, but was quick out of the blocks in his two outings.

With wife Gabby he saw off the charge of Northern Ireland pair Tony Murphy and Alannah Stephenson 2-0 in the mixed doubles round of 32.

That match came in the afternoon, and in the evening he was back at the Emirates Arena in the men’s doubles round of 32 with Andrew Ellis and just as successful.

They beat Douglas Clark and Ross Stewart of the Falkland Islands 2-0 as well, but it was a scoreboard error in the clash with his wife that had him smiling most.

“The umpire made a mistake at the start and I think you can only go back point by point which is why it took a bit of time,” he said.

“I think we would have known what the score was. You look at it even though it’s not intentional.”

Adcock faces a two-match schedule once again today (Thursday) at the Emirates Arena with Malaysian pair Vivian Kah Mun Hoo and Wee Kiong Tan up in the mixed doubles.

He and Ellis will combine in the evening again in the men’s doubles against Murphy and his Northern Ireland partner Tony Stephenson – and wife Gabby has a few words for him

“It’s quite easy to switch off. Perhaps Chris switched off and needs to concentrate more. That was all about staying switched on and focused. It was about getting the job done and saving energy,” she said.

“We’ve been top seeds in other events so it doesn’t make any difference to have a little star next to our names. We are not feeling any pressure and we’re really enjoying playing here.”
