Adlington grabs second British gold

Mansfield’s double Olympic champion Rebecca Adlington grabbed her second gold of the British Swimming Championships on Tuesday evening, winning the 200m freestyle.

It was her second title in Manchester, following victory in the 400m freestyle on Saturday.

Adlington, fourth at the final turn, finished in one minute 58.90 seconds, 0.13 secs ahead of second place.

Adlington said: “I knew it was going to be a close race. The time isn’t massively quick compared to the rest of the world.

“This time of year it’s about the racing and getting involved and that is what I have done this week and I am so pleased.”

She will be aiming for a third title later this week.

The Mansfield star has made no secret of the fact she believes that this week marks the start of her final preparations for the London 2012 Olympics, now just over 500 days away. And she is seeking to cement her place in this year’s World Championships in Shanghai, where the world’s best will be looking to lay down their markers before the Olympics.

At the last World Championships, Adlington suffered mixed fortunes - tearfully failing to deliver gold in either of the events in which she was Olympic champion and returning with just two bronze medals for her efforts.

But after winning seven medals at last year’s European Championship and Commonwealth Games, including three golds, Adlington is now bang back in form.
