When lockdown is over, step back in time

It may currently feel like the war is back on with lockdown in place and politicians evoking wartime spirit as the country battles COVID-19 pandemic.

As the country prepares to celebrate 75th anniversary of VE Day on May 8, thoughts of wartime spirit have never been more appropriate.

When the lockdown finally ends we can get a feel for how life really was during the war at one of various wartime museums and experiences around the country.

There are several to choose from including The 1940s Experience at the Lincolnsfields Centre in Hertfordshire.

Located on what was originally the site of Bushey Hall - the wartime location of the USAAF 8th Fighter Command Headquarters from 1942 to 1945 - this is a unique WWII Heritage site.

The centre is a registered charity that provides a variety of opportunities, led by an enthusiastic team catering to the needs of children, young people and adults.

The centre is also home to the 1940s Experience which has been growing in stature and popularity since 2006.

As well as being used for educational purposes, the experience is usually open to the public on the last Sunday of each month from January to November, as well as first Sunday in December under normal circumstances.

During these open days you can come and experience many aspects of the 1940s displayed through a variety of means, viewing objects from that time, interaction with people, visual and ‘hands-on’ activities, all of which are accessible to schools visiting during the week.

Throughout your visit, the team of volunteers will be on hand to discuss the artefacts on display, topics of interest that may arise or indeed you may want to reminisce how growing up has changed during the intervening years.

Visitors can experience a 1940s house, see the dig for victory garden, enjoy a tea dance, visit the dressing up room and experience being in the blitz.
