What is a New Moon?

The Moon is the Earth's one and only natural satellite which is only visible due to the Sun's rays bouncing off the Moon's light surface.

The Moon goes through eight different phases during one lunar cycle as it orbits the Earth, which takes just over 27 days to complete.

Though it requires another two days to get to the place it was at the start of the lunar cycle, due to the Earth's orbit of the Sun.

Every month the Moon travels between Earth and the Sun, which means sunlight hits the other side of the Moon not visible from Earth.

“Following the night of each full Moon, as the moon orbits around Earth, we start to see less of the Moon lit by the Sun," says NASA.

“Eventually, the Moon reaches a point in its orbit when we don't see any of the Moon illuminated. At that point, the far side of the Moon is facing the Sun.”
