Schoolchildren have now been asked to stay home, as the UK Government takes extreme measures to bring coronavirus numbers down.

With the cold weather making it difficult to get outdoors and exercise, Joe Wicks has sprung back into action with his online PE classes for kids and adults.

He launched his free online morning workouts in April during the initial lockdown, and now everyone can take part again, as he relaunched them on 11 January.

Who is Joe Wicks?

The English fitness coach is famous for his approach to exercise and nutrition, having written books on how to create family-friendly quick meals at home and work out effectively in limited time.

Also known as The Body CoachCoach’, the 34-year-old has been made an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours list for his efforts at keeping kids active in lockdown.

He is known for his ‘HIIT’ (High Intensity Interval Training) approach which involves a short burst of intense exercise coupled with a short period of rest.

However, this might not be suitable for everyone, so he also offers workouts for beginners and seniors too.

What do his online classes involve?

Joe runs classes on the online platform Youtube, and restarted them on 11 January at 9am.

He announced this on his Instagram @Thebodycoach, telling his 3.9million followers: “I've decided I need to come back and be there for children during this time, through this lockdown when schools are closed to keep their exercise up, to keep their activities there, their energy, their mood, their mental health.

“I'm going to be doing PE with Joe live, three days a week Monday, Wednesday, Friday starting next week on the 11th.”

Last year, when his sessions were watched by nearly one million people each time, he carried out family workouts which included one exercise for 30 seconds, resting for 30 seconds, and then repeating this several times for 30 minutes with a range of different exercises.

Wicks also offered classes for seniors throughout the first lockdown, which are still available to view on his YouTube channel.

Do you need equipment?

Not necessarily. The workouts can be carried out using only your own bodyweight and a limited amount of space.

However, you can increase the intensity of the workout by adding weights or holding a kettlebell or dumbbells while participating.

The workouts are designed to keep school-aged children active, but the entire family can take part.

When are the workouts on and how do I watch them?

The live workouts will take place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9am and you can get involved by tuning into Joe Wicks’ YouTube TV - you can join by visiting his YouTube and clicking on the LIVE TV icon at 9am.

However, previous workouts are also available to watch at your convenience on his YouTube channel.

A range of mobility and beginners classes that last 10-20 minutes are also available on his YouTube channel in case you feel you are not quite ready for a HIIT workout - however, these do not take place live.

There are no live streamed workouts at the weekend.
