117 new emojis are coming later this year - here’s the full list

The emoji keyboard is welcoming a new batch of 117 designs set to be released in 2020. It has been revealed by Unicode Consortium, a non-profit organisation in California responsible for choosing the emojis for Apple and Android devices.

This is what you can expect from the latest emoji update.

117 new emojis

Included in the new emojis are the likes of gender inclusive icons, such as:

Gender neutral Santa Clause called Mx ClausWoman in tuxedoMan with veilGender neutral parent bottle feeding a babyThe transgender symbol and flag

There are also new smiley faces and hand gestures, like:

Smiling face with a tearSmiling face with disguise wearing fake nose, moustache and glassesPinched fingers commonly associated with a stereotypical Italian hand gesturePeople hugging, which is depicted by two blue figures shown in an embrace

Also featured in the line up is a range of new animals, including:

A black catA dodoA sealA wormA polar bear

Of course it wouldn’t be a new emoji announcement if there wasn’t also a random selection of emojis that leave people wondering ‘Why?’, like:

A mirrorAn accordionA logA roller skateA green bell pepper

When will the new emojis be released?

No specific date has been released for when you’ll be seeing these new emojis on your phone, but there has been speculation that it should be around the second half of 2020.

Emojipedia said, “Expect to see these new emojis on major operating systems in the second half of 2020.

“These tend to come to Android in beta around August, and to iOS and macOS in October or November.”

Online reactions

The announcement of the new additions to the emoji dictionary have been mixed, with some people excited to see more accurate reflections of themselves represented in emoji form - and others flabbergasted by some of the new additions.

One Twitter user wrote, “Great to see this, a small but much needed step into further Trans inclusivity. Representation matters! We look forward to seeing these new unicode emojis rolled out.”

Another tweeted, “Getting to see yourself and your pride in technology you use is validation that you are being heard and that your voice matters. Some top callouts: man in veil, trans flag and Mx Clause. Which are you most excited for??”

Pointing out some of the more obscure emojis included in the list, one user wrote, “The log and rock emojis are my new jam.”

“I am looking forward to the new cockroach & bell pepper emojis. Those are the only things I talk about,” wrote another on the social media platform.

An exasperated user tweeted, “Let’s take a look at the hotly-anticipated new emojis for 2020 and GOD NO ACCORDIONS”
