Young woman’s engineering award honour

A young woman from Selston has received a prestigious award for going beyond the call of duty in the workplace.

Jessica Bestwick (20), of Stoney Lane, a Higher Technical Apprentice with Rolls-Royce ,was awarded the Mary George Memorial Prize for Apprentices.

Jessica, who is training as a development engineer, was handed her award at a glitzy London ceremony the BBC’s Steph McGovern.

Said Jessica: “I am glad to be able to encourage more women in engineering.

“And it gives me a chance to get out there with young potential engineers.”

Beside her normal duties, the Selston girl is chairman of the Civil Engineering Apprentice Council, and is responsible for maintaining the standards of the Rolls Royce apprenticeship.

Once fully qualified, Jessica will be testing jet engines for certification.

She said: “You get to move around and experience different elements of the business.

“My job is so varied because you are constantly kept busy and no two days are the same.”

“It is fantastic that they have given me this recognition and it is quite a shock which has not sunk in just yet to be honest.”
