Young Sutton airman killed after he was hit by car on A1

Tributes have been paid after a young RAF airman from Sutton died after being hit by a car on the A1.

SAC Andrew Hallam, 23, who was stationed at RAF Wittering , was killed at about 1.50am on Sunday when he was hit by a green BMW 330i on the A1 southbound near Wittering.

Police believe SAC Hallam, had been dropped off when he was hit.

Station commander of RAF Wittering, Group Capt Damian Alexander said: “RAF Wittering has met the news of Senior Aircraftsman Hallam’s tragic death with sadness and disbelief.

“His loss will be intensely felt; our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his friends, family and his unit, 3 Squadron RAF Regiment.”

Sqn Ldr Phil Skorge, officer commanding 3 Squadron, said: “The sudden death of SAC Andrew Hallam is a shock that has left 3 Squadron with senses of profound loss and deep sorrow.

“He was a respected member of the unit, highly valued by his colleagues and senior officers. SAC Hallam’s recent selection for an elite sniper-training course says much of his professionalism, dedication and promise.

“He was one of our characters; a willingness to help others and a sense of humour that prevailed in the darkest of situations ensured that he was well liked and popular throughout the Squadron. He will be greatly missed.”

Cdr RAF Regt, Group Captain Scott Miller said: “This is tragic news and we are all saddened by the loss of such a valued colleague. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.”

The driver of the BMW, a 49-year-old woman from Cambridge, and her passenger, a 48-year-old man, were not hurt.
