Karl Saywell was found drunk and extremely abusive, with a bleeding hand in Retford town centre by police officers, on March 24.

“He shouted: “I will fight you all - you’re a bunch of *****.”” said prosecutor Kate Hartley.

He was arrested for a public order offence, and was found with small amounts of cannabis and cocaine when he was searched at the police station.

David Grant, mitigating, said: “He regrets being in that situation.

“Over the 18 month period previous he had lost a series of family members, he had lost his job and he became homeless.

“He had a blazing row with his partner. He decided to drown his sorrows. He described it, in his own words, as going on a mad one.

“He wasn’t fit to walk the ten minutes home and the taxi driver refused, quite rightly, to take him. He kicked off at that moment.”

Saywell, 31, of Masefield Place, admitted threatening behaviour and possession of the Class A and B drugs, when he appeared at Mansfield Magistrates Court, on Wednesday.

The court heard he had previous convictions for assault, driving with excess alcohol and disobeying court orders.

District judge Jonathan Taaffe said: “You told the police it was out of character, but from looking at your record it seems to me that it is very much in keeping with your character.”

Saywell was given an eight week curfew, from 7pm to 6am, and was ordered to pay £85 costs and an £85 government surcharge.
