White Post lamb attacked and killed

Staff at the Farnsfield-based tourist attraction found the four month-old Jacob sheep dead in his paddock on Wednesday morning last week.

Rebecca Allott, operations manager, said staff and the farm’s vet believed the wounds to the animal could only have been caused by a large dog.

She added: “Somebody has obviously come with a bit dog - like the size of a Husky or Alsatian - on the site and let it run around the field.

“At this stage the lambs are away from their mothers and living in their own little teenage social group.

“It would have been horrible for him - the bites are underneath his neck so the dog would have pulled him down

“This could only have been a horrible way to go and all the others would be scared because they all flock quite narrowly together.”

Another lamb - which was bitten through its nose and under its mouth - was also badly injured during the attack.

Rebecca said it was shaken but would hopefully recover as long as infection did not set in.

Meanwhile, the lambs have been moved out of the field.

But Rebecca added: “That is not a long-term solution. I just hope we can figure this out before they go back into the paddock again.

“The police have been out to have a look but there is not much they can do.

“After this we have decided to have some CCTV installed for extra security.”
