CHAD’s brand new Tourist Trails book, which aims to promote tourism across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, is now on sale at a number of outlets across the area.

The 80-page book has been penned by Chad journalist and first-time author Stephen and features in-depth tours around seven prominent tourist hotspots and beauty locations across the Mansfield, Ashfield and wider area.

During his tours, Stephen delves behind the headlines to bring you many unusual and interesting tales about the places and people who have helped create the life and soul of Hardwick Hall, Teversal Trails, Chatsworth House, Southwell Workhouse, Newstead Abbey, King’s Mill Reservoir and Clumber Park throughout the centuries.

The book, which is priced at £9.99, can be purchased by calling Stephen Thirkill on 01623 450292, from all Chad receptions, Clumber Park gift shop, Rufford Abbey gift shop, The Sherwood Tourist Information Centre on Ollerton roundabout, or via Amazon or Waterstones

“Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire has many attractions to be very proud of and I hope this book will encourage readers to get out and about and see these places for themselves,” said Stephen.

“It was a real pleasure putting together this book and meeting the dedicated guides and volunteers who have helped make their individual attractions the success story they are today.

“The region has so many fantastic attractions with amazing history, heritage and inspirational people and visiting each attraction really filled me with a sense of inspiration and admiration.

“I feel lucky to have been able to go behind the scenes and visit areas not available to regular visitors and it is good to know that our area’s tourist industry is in good hands and set for a bright future.

“One of my main ambitions in life was to have a book published. It seems a very long time ago since I first sat down to begin work on this book and, now that it has been published, it is very satisfying to have fulfilled that dream.

“Making this dream a reality would not have been possible had it not been for the support of the guides, National Trust, English Heritage, local authorities and Chad editor Tracy Powell. I am very grateful for their support given to me during this project.”

During the book, which has been published to accompany Chad’s popular audio guide tourism CD, Stephen takes a step back in time to learn about the success of a national social experiment at Southwell Workhouse and what made the world-famous Lord Byron tick during a special behind-the-scenes visit to Newstead Abbey.

Stephen also explores the magnificent Chatsworth House to discover why the attraction is proving so popular with film-makers.

He also learns about the fascinating life of Bess of Hardwick, who became the second richest lady in the realm behind the Queen with Hardwick Hall a lasting legacy to her fame and fortune.

And nature lovers are also in for a treat as Stephen tours the picturesque King’s Mill Reservoir to discover its Royal connections, the beautiful Teversal Trails, which is playing a key role in the district’s regeneration, and Clumber Park, where he learns all about the battle to conserve, preserve and thrive.

Copies of the audio guide CD, which accompanies the book, can also be purchased for £7.99 by calling Stephen Thirkill on 01623 450292, or by visiting Chad receptions, Clumber Park, Rufford Abbey or Southwell Workhouse
