Scott Fuller (24), from Alfreton, is studying an Access to Nursing course at the Derby Road Campus and is scheduled to start at Sheffield Hallam University in the autumn.

But the former Swanwick Hall pupil is equally ambitious to make it as a charting musician, having recorded a string of songs and with an album planned.

“Songwriting is always something that I wanted to do and I guess I had it in the genes with my dad and sister both playing the piano,” said Scott.

“I was out of work for three months and I decided then I would learn how to play using YouTube tutorials, with no lessons, and it took me around six months to get proficient.

“I just started putting my feelings down on paper, and the songs grew from there. I really like the music of Damien Rice, because he does the same thing - writes what he is thinking.

“Jake Bugg is also a big influence, being from just around the corner, and shows you can make it if you are talented and determined enough.”

Scott has already performed an acoustic set for Amber Sound and is poised for other local radio appearances in the near future.

He is also due back in the studio to record more tracks with the intention of releasing and EP in early May.

Remarkably, Scott also holds down a full-time job working as a carer and as a personal assistant, in addition to his studies.

He added: “It’s hard to get yourself known but I keep pestering people because I’m a firm believer you can do something if you work at it hard enough.

“I’m thinking about doing the X-Factor this year because the more exposure I can get the better.”

Scott’s music has helped him come through a tough period in his life and he hopes what he has to say resonates with others.

“I had some counselling when my mum and dad split up and I think writing down my how I felt, as they advised, actually help me,” he said.

“It made me realise that things were probably not as bad as I first thought.”
