Hudson now lives with his retirement owner Cathy, who was unable to insure him before the attack due to an existing medical condition that caused him to retire early as a working guide dog.

‘Hudson helped me through dark times’Nathan said: "Cathy is a caring woman who would happily pay these bills herself if money was no object, however the whole timing of this incident has fell upon difficult financial times."

Nathan said he will pay half of the bills but has asked if anyone can spare a "few pounds and contribute to Hudson’s vet bills."

He said: "So far Hudson’s bills have amounted to £545 with this expected to reach in excess of £800 with his daily bandage replacements costing £40 a time. However this figure could still increase as he may still need further surgery.

"If any funds are left over following the end of his treatment, the remaining funds will be donated to the charity Guide Dogs."
