Welfare club site earmarked for houses and flats

The land on Fourth Avenue once housed Thoresby Welfare Club but was cleared two years ago and has stood vacant ever since.

Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation (CISWO) has now applied to the planning department at Newark and Sherwood District Council to not only build on the site of the bulldozed club, but also the adjacent land which currently has a playground area and car park.

A bowling green and a disused green situated near the site are not included in the plans, with a deal struck with Edwinstowe Parish Council to develop that area.

A statement with the application reads: “CISWO has reached a formal agreement with the parish council for their use of the existing bowling green and disused bowling green so that their use can be continued and developed further for community use.

“It is proposed that the currently disused bowling green will be developed into a children’s play area which will be larger and better equipped than the current facility.

“The lease also ensures that the bowling green remains available for longer period of time.

CISWO says it has also contributed £85,000 to the development of the nearby Thoresby sports field.

Although not set in stone, CISWO says up to 14 new homes could be built on the site of the play ground and car park, with the potential for 22 flats built on the site of the club.

Previous discussions identified that ground-floor accommodation for the elderly is required, while the flats could help deliver the minimum 30 per cent affordable accommodation that is required.
