Week in the wild for young people

The group, aged between 17 and 20, who had never met each other before, spent five days and four nights learning new skills and enjoying outdoor activities in the heart of Sherwood Pines.

The participants stayed in the forest and learnt a wide variety of bushcraft skills – from mastering fire lighting techniques, shelter building and using tools, through to traditional woodland crafts such as green woodworking, basketry and whittling.

They built their own shelters to sleep in, enjoyed night-time challenges and wildlife walks, and cooked their food over the campfire.

Ranger Karina Thornton said: ““Everyone worked incredibly hard to make this residential part of their award a big success. Helping young people to achieve their gold award is such a rewarding experience and we look forward to welcoming even more groups.”
