Torrential downpours cause flooding and traffic chaos across Nottinghamshire

A yellow weather warning is in place across Nottinghamshire this morning (Thursday June 18).

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms across Nottinghamshire and most of the UK from 12pm today with bad weather expected to last for 12 hours.

The Met Office has warned slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms are predicted to lead to flooding disruption.

Police report a significant amount of rain across Nottinghamshire last night with localised surface water flooding which has affected roads and properties.

Roads were affected in areas including Beeston, Bramcote, Stapleford, Radford, Wollaton Vale, Chilwell, Lenton Abbey and Broxtowe.

Local authorities and emergency services were made aware of incidents. Nottinghamshire Police say that no-one has had to be evacuated from properties.

More rain is forecast into tonight and tomorrow. A second yellow weather warning for rain tomorrow across Nottinghamshire has also been issued.

A police spokesman said: “Drivers are urged to take extra care on the roads. Remember that it will take a lot longer to stop your car in wet weather, so leave plenty of room to the car in front.

“You should take notice of all road closure signs and do not drive through large amounts of standing water.”

It will be misty and overcast this morning with persistent and occasionally heavy rainfall. Rain easing this afternoon with brighter spells developing in the south and east, though one or two late showers are possible here. Maximum temperature 20 °C.

Tonight it will become dry and mostly clear during the evening with any showers easing. There will be ome mist and low cloud returning overnight but remaining dry. Minimum temperature 8 °C.
