Isolated heavy thunderstorms are expected to develop on across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
These are likely to become more frequent later and spread northwards.
Up to 30mm of rain could fall in an hour, and up to 50mm over three hours.
Humid airmass moving up from the continent is being blamed for the forecast, with large amounts of energy generated in the atmosphere.
