SATURDAY’S Ashfield Festival has been cancelled due to poor weather conditions, council chiefs confirmed on Wednesday.
Heavy and persistent rain has caused water logging of the grounds and bosses say holding the event would cause significant damage to Sutton Lawn.
Ashfield District Council has had to take the tough decision to cancel the event, but it will seek to ensure that a celebration for residents and those who have participated in sporting activities is held later in the year.
Coun John Wilmott said: “It is with regret that this popular annual event has had to be cancelled. All options have been considered, including the safety of the public and the extensive damage that would be caused to the park and it has been decided that the best option is to cancel this year’s event.
“Many of the contractors had expressed major concerns about the condition of the site. Discussions are already taking place for alternative celebrations for the people of Ashfield.”
Trevor Watson, service director – economy, added: “The council has not taken the decision to cancel the event lightly, however the health and safety of the public is paramount and holding the event in current conditions would compromise this.”
