Warsop charity shop hits the £100k mark

A Warsop couple who opened a charity shop four years ago to support retired greyhounds are celebrating after raising more than £100,000.

The Retired Greyhound Trust (RGT) Charity Shop, on Sherwood Street in the town, was set up in 2010 by couple Eric Forster and Mave Dummer.

The trust has more than 70 branches around the country which help to find retired greyhounds new homes when their racing careers come to an end.

And the Warsop store is the only charity shop in the country which exclusively raises cash for the charity.

Eric, a greyhound trainer, told Chad: “As a trainer and owner of greyhounds I just love them and Mave has been brought up around the breed all her life so they are very special to us.

“They are brilliant animals who make ideal pets because they are so docile and laid back.

“We set up the shop because we wanted to do something to help the RGT find loving homes for the greyhounds.

“The shop became available and we just decided to go for it and see how things took off.

“Mave runs the shop with her trusty four volunteers and I just help where I can driving things about.

“To have reached the £100,000 mark is absolutely incredible as never in our wildest dreams did we think we would raise that amount of money.”

The funds are split between more than 50 of the RGT branches, but Sheffield’s Owlerton Stadium, where Eric regularly attends, is their main beneficiary.

“Both Mave and I would like to thank all our volunteers and customers who donate to us and buy our goods,” added Eric.

“It’s not always easy volunteering but to know we are helping the dogs find new homes and to get a bit of recognition like this every now and again is wonderful.”
